This SELECTAC screen is set up to find accounts with FDTYPE code "EQUITY" that are less than 80% invested in equities.
- Using SELECTAC to find accounts
The function SELECTAC can be used in Portvue Windows or in the Expert System to find a group of accounts by specifying their characteristics.
- A. Entering selection criteria
When you enter SELECTAC, you will see the following screen:

When you first enter SELECTAC, all the selection items are set to include all of your accounts if you are running in the Expert menu, or the accounts in your current universe or sub-select if you are in Windows. Your goal is to narrow this selection by filling in the fields on the screen. Any field that is irrelevant to your search may be left unchanged.
When you select by more than one criterion, SELECTAC assumes that all criteria must be satisfied. This is like joining commands in EDAC with "AND". To use an "OR", this must be done in the "Additional Search Criteria" section.
As with other screen functions, pressing F1 will allow you to see the list of expected answers for the field you are in, and pressing F9 will allow you to cycle through those answers. The system will identify your choice if you type in the first few characters and press TAB. The TAB key is also the way to move from field to field.
- At the RR: field, enter the numerical RR code of the accounts you want to select. If you want more than one RR code, you can make an entry in the "Additional Search Criteria" area. Leave RR set at "0" if you do not want to select by RR code
- If you use ADM, MGR, or FDTYPE codes, you can select by any or all of them by entering the desired code in the corresponding field. Press F1 to see a list of the codes existing in your account master file
- To work with the "Common Range Selections", remember to specify both the high end and the low end for each item you use. The ranges are inclusive, so if you specify accounts that are between 0% and 50% invested in equities, you will get the accounts that have no equity holdings at all. If you wanted to get only those accounts that had at least some equity, you might specify a range from 0.01% to 50%.
The ratings, yield, and duration selections are available only to clients using the new fixed-income module. These fields select accounts based on market-value weighted averages. These selections are read from the $FIXAVG pseudo fields, which are updated nightly for every windows account. These fields are also updated by committed trades in the trading system.
For the rating ranges, lists of the actual ratings used by S & P and Moody's are available if you press F1.
The "Percent in Cash", "Percent in Fixed", and "Percent in Equity" fields reflect the actual current percentage in each asset class. These fields are updated nightly, and are affected by committed trades in the trading system.
The "Target Fixed" and "Target Equity" fields read from the DESFIX and DESPCT fields in the account master file.
Note: Use the "Additional Search Criteria" to specify any selection that is not available on the screen. You can select by any account master file field. Each line should start with the word "AND" or "OR" to indicate whether this new criterion narrows or broadens the search. You can put in one or several lines of additional criteria, or leave it blank.
- Picking additional data items for display
After you have entered all your selection criteria, press F7 to see if you are getting any "hits". The number of accounts found will appear in the upper right corner of the screen. If the number does not seem right, go over your criteria and change them as appropriate.
Once you believe you have the accounts you want, press F10 to continue. When the system lists the selected accounts, it will always display SNAM, DTCNO1/2, and market value weighted averages for yield, duration, and ratings. To display additional fields, you can specify them now. You will see the following screen:

Note: This list includes all the available account master file fields.
Select fields in one of two ways:
- Highlight the field you want and press return. An asterisk will appear by the selected field. To un-select the field, press return to remove the asterisk
- Press the F8 key, and select the "Search and INCLUDE All Matches" option. Then when the system prompts you "Please Enter Search String", respond by entering the name of the field, and press return. You can use this feature to select more than one field at a time if the fields have similar names. For example, if you want to view all the PCT fields, which calculate the percentage of an account held in various asset classes, you might enter PCT, matching DESPCT, PCTAVC, PCTCSH, PCTDIF, PCTEQT, PCTFIX, and BRKPCT
If you do not need any additional fields, press either ESC or F10 to continue to the list of accounts.
- Working with the selected accounts
Once you have selected the accounts you want, you can do many things with them. Use the F8 options key to sort the accounts, or to select certain accounts within the group. Selecting accounts with the group becomes important when you are using SELECTAC as a trading tool.
Press F9 to move from screen to screen horizontally. Press shift-F7 to print a copy of the screen. Press F3 or ESC to return to the selection screen. When you return to the selection screen, your original criteria will still be displayed. Modify them as necessary if you are still narrowing your selection, or press F6 to clear the screen and start over again. To leave the function entirely, first return to the selection screen, then press F3 or ESC again.
SELECTAC can also be used to find accounts whenever you bring up the account selection box, either within a trading tool or within a report that allows you to select several accounts simultaneously. To do this, type \SELECTAC at the SEARCH: prompt. The SELECTAC screen will appear, and you can go through the usual selection procedure. When all the accounts you want to use are selected and visible on the screen, you'll notice that each account is market with an asterisk next to its short name. Replace the asterisk with an empty space for any account you want to omit. Then press F10 to use the selected accounts.
